Job Summary

The Activities and Community Engagement Supervisor will oversee and develop after-school and summer programming in the Yaghanen K-12 Culture and Language program. Working with the Yaghanen K-12 Administrator and the Education and School Engagement Supervisor, this person will supervise a team of culture instructors and the NYO Head Coach, and will ensure delivery of programming in Jabila'ina Dance, Del Dumi drum group, Native Youth Olympics, Susten Archeology, Dena'ina Language curriculum, instruction, and program evaluation to ensure developmentally and culturally appropriate support. The Activities and Community Engagement Supervisor will maintain on-going contact with families, and work with all other program components (health, nutrition, parent, family and community engagement, and mental health). The Activities and Community Engagement Supervisor will establish internal and external community partnerships to promote participation in cultural activities, encourage health and well-being of students, and provide opportunities for development in cultural pride for students in the Yaghanen program.

Essential Functions

  • Plans and implements culturally and developmentally appropriate programming for on-site after school and summer programs
  • Supervises team of culture instructors and the NYO Head Coach, and monitors, evaluates, and adjusts program based on data
  • Provides new ideas and methods of incorporating Dena'ina culture and language to youth and the community
  • Coordinates off-site learning experiences that emphasize cultural identity through the practice of Indigenous activities (i.e. NYO, drumming, dancing)
  • Provides or oversees transportation to youth during programming activities
  • Collaborates and participates in community events with youth
  • Prepares monthly reports, lesson plans, screening results, and documented parent contacts
  • Compiles information for grant reporting; prepare reports to meet the grant requirements
  • Provides oversight and supervision for the NYO program and Head Coach
  • Provides staff development and training in Indigenous pedagogy and effective student and classroom management practices
  • Ensures compliance with Tribal, federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, Tribal policies and TERO ordinance

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Physical Education, Sports Science, Indigenous Studies, or related field, or a combination of education and experience in a related field may be substituted for a degree

Experience

  • Three (3) years of experience teaching middle and high school age children in formal or informal settings

Preferred

  • Knowledge and experience working with cultural diversities

License/Certification

  • Must have a valid Alaska State driver's license and must remain insurable under the Tribe's policy
  • Must have Pediatric/Adult First Aid/CPR, or obtain within 90 days of hire

Special Skills

  • Teaching Social-Emotional Education, Anti-bullying, or similar affective programs
  • Working with students with disabilities and mixed age groups
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Suite, or obtain training within 90 days of hire
  • Conducts business in a service-oriented manner that is attentive, pleasant, respectful and kind when dealing with un'ina, visitors, co-workers and others
  • Ability to multi-task, work independently, and meet deadlines

This position is a Covered Position subject to all requirements of the Alaska Barrier Crimes Act (ABCA) and to the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act, (ICPA). ABCA and ICPA requirements apply and must be complied with at all times in order to remain in the position.
