Summary: This position is open to AKNG Permanent or Indefinite technicians, all AKNG members, and other eligible current military members who can join the Alaska Army National Guard.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepares surfaces by removing rust, paint, and loose particles.
  • Sands and evens out dents and scars to assure a smooth and level surface.
  • Applies coatings to specified areas ensuring that surfaces are free from skips, runs, and drips.
  • Applies rustproof compound to areas such as splash panels, quarter panels, seams structural members, and underbody construction.
  • Applies coatings using brushes, rollers, and spray paint equipment.
  • Prepares coating materials by tinting, toning, etching, blending, and mixing in various additives.
  • Applies prime, intermediate and final coats of semi-gloss, gloss and other paint, lacquer, enamel, varnish and shellac.
  • Replaces and applies markings/lettering as specified by appropriate manuals.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints when applying camouflage patterns.
  • Monitors and adjusts air pressures in paint booth, controls heat settings and drying times in drying booth to achieve proper surface adhesion of coatings.
  • Completes records for paint usage and paint waste as per environmental regulations.
  • Applies Chemical Agent Reactive Coating (CARC) materials in accordance with specifications and dimensions.
  • Cleans and maintains painting equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

General Experience: Experience or training which demonstrates the candidate's knowledge of surface preparation (removal of rust, dirt, paint, etc.); coating methods (brushing, rolling, and spraying); and coating materials (paints, varnishes, shellacs, etc.). Must have the ability to use tools and equipment associated with the painting trade and to read and interpret directions.

Specialized Experience:

WG-08: At least 12 months of experience or training which demonstrates the candidate's knowledge of standard surface preparation and coating methods and techniques. Experience must demonstrate the skill to sand, wire brush, scrape, spackle, putty, prep surfaces and select appropriate tools to complete assigned tasks. Experience must also demonstrate the skill to brush on, roll on, and spray coating materials, and apply other related methods and techniques, such as cutting-in techniques and dip and overflow methods. Experience which required the applicant to interpret and follow technical orders, specifications, and publications.

WG-09: At least 18 months of experience or training which demonstrates the candidate's knowledge of any surface preparation and coating methods and techniques. Skill in building up, shaping, and leveling surfaces with metal and synthetic resins, plastics, and patching compounds; obtain finely smoothed surfaces with abrasive compounds, pumice, and rottenstone; even out dents and scars by burning-in processes; and treat surfaces with pre-coating agents.

Experience Requirements:

Resume must have complete dates and hours worked per week for each occurrence of both civilian and military employment (Example: 2 JAN 1980 to 3 MAR 1981; 0800-1630 M-F or JAN 1980 to MAR 1981; 40 hrs/wk) Use of year only will result in disqualification. Your record of experience and/or training must show possession of the following knowledge, skills and abilities needed to fully perform the duties of the position:

- Knowledge of standard and accepted surface preparation and coating methods and techniques to apply coatings to stationary and mobile equipment, and to combat, tactical, and commercial vehicles.

- Ability to prepare coating materials by tinting, toning, etching, blending, and mixing in various additives.

- Knowledge of coating materials so that surfaces are free from skips, runs, and drips.

- Skill to sand, wire brush, scrape, spackle, and putty surfaces; to brush on, roll on, and spray coating materials; and to apply other related methods and techniques.

- Ability to read and apply directions that relate to the mixture, use, and application of various kinds of coating materials, solvents, etc.

- Skill in using tools and equipment such as scrapers, wire brushes, putty knives, sandpaper, paintbrushes, rollers, and spray guns.
