The compensation range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual salaries or rates will be set within this range based on market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise, and internal equity considerations. Responsibilities Provide bilingual interpretation services to Spanish‑speaking patients, families, and others throughout the University. Manage flow of communication autonomously and efficiently between source and target languages during medical and non‑medical encounters across URMC’s clinical specialties in inpatient and ambulatory settings. Respond to all pages assigned by the hospital, including 24/7 coverage and on‑call weekend shifts as required. Interpret all assignments in a timely and professional manner in accordance with hospital policy. Collaborate with clinical and non‑clinical staff to determine the situational context of each patient encounter. Select appropriate communication ground rules and methods, inform all parties of the interpreter’s role, and brief health professionals on any relevant information about the patient or encounter. Assess and recommend the most effective communication method for patients with barriers to communication, altered mental status, or other special needs; verify the patient’s preferred language correctly. Choose the appropriate mode for optimal communication (consecutive, simultaneous, sight‑translation) and propose the most suitable service delivery modality (in‑person, video, telephone) based on patient needs. Debrief with healthcare professionals after the encounter, as necessary, to optimize understanding and provide linguistic and cultural insights. Monitor for linguistic misunderstandings and recommend adjustments to formality and style as needed. Prioritize, triage, and respond to multiple service requests in order of critical urgency and patient acuity. Support cultural responsiveness by assessing cross‑cultural impacts on communication and intervening to prevent misunderstandings and promote trust. Serve as an integral member of clinical and non‑clinical teams 24/7 as the specialist in language and culture. Provide interdisciplinary education to all team members for effective communication during encounters, patient trainings, and teachings. Ensure compliance with Title VI, Executive Order 13166, Medicaid Managed Care Requirements, CLAS Standards, and other applicable regulations by identifying interpreting service needs and informing leadership of recommendations. Apply established national healthcare interpreter code of ethics and standards, adhere to Joint Commission Standards and department policies, complete documentation in the electronic medical record, and maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA. Maintain interpreter performance‑based skills through initial assessment and ongoing professional development activities such as webinars, conferences, and self‑directed learning. Complete all required training, including yearly mandatory online policy and procedure training, yearly health updates, staff meetings, and other activities as necessary. Complete all documentation, paperwork, and administrative duties, including eRecord completion, database entries, yearly certification updates, professional development transcripts, and other assignments as needed. Minimum Education & Experience Associate’s degree required. Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred. One year interpreting in a healthcare setting strongly preferred. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Fluency in English and Spanish with strong verbal and written skills in both languages (required). Knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, pathology, clinical tests, and procedures in the working languages (strongly preferred). Strong customer service and communication skills (strongly preferred). Ability to travel to offsite locations (required). Certification Completion of a 40‑hour training course in medical interpreting (required). Certification in healthcare interpreting through CCHI or IMIA strongly preferred at hire or within 18 months (preferred). Translation certification preferred.
