Chuang Residence

Perched above the Pacific Ocean, the Chuang Residence commands a sweeping view of the sea below. After completing a renovation on the home’s interior, the Client looked to extend their renovated interior spaces into the yard and take full advantage of the view.

Annemarie Hall Design worked with the Client to create usable, livable spaces within the confines of a small yard and yet maintain the ocean view. The Client wished to reflect the blue of the California sky and ‘pull’ the ocean into the backyard. Annemarie Hall Design created a linear reflecting pool with quiet water movement and sound and introduce and a long low profile to the fountain to bring the ocean into the yard.

The overall colors and lines are simple and elegant and reflect the Clients sophisticated clean aesthetic. The materials and forms are a play between traditional Santa Barbara style architecture and the more contemporary mindset of the Client. Used brick is set against smooth beach pebble and clean white stucco walls frame the clean-lined contemporary furniture. A raised terrace brings guests above the lawn to enhance the view up the coastline and bring the guests closer to the sea. A simple fire-pit doubles as a coffee table and is perfect for keeping guests warm on a cool evening. The built-in-seat wall and fountain create a sophisticated dining area for outdoor entertaining. Olive trees, succulents in pots and a textural plant palette offer an eclectic yet contemporary planting scheme with low water requirements.
